Grooving Guide

Lede · Products · Technical guide · Catalogues

Why it matters. Lede grooved systems require a roll or cut groove on the pipe ends being joined. Because the housing keys seat in the groove, a correct groove is the condition for a safe, leak-free joint.

Nominal size

Couplings and fittings are identified by nominal IPS size in inches, or by nominal pipe diameter (DN) in mm. In some markets pipes of different outside diameter share the same nominal size, so always check the actual outside diameter of the pipe to be joined. Roll grooves must meet ANSI/AWWA C606.

Square cut

Pipe ends must be cut square. Cut with a band saw or automatic circular saw. Permitted deviation: 0.8 mm up to 3½" (90 mm); 1.2 mm for 4"–6" (100–150 mm); 1.6 mm for 8" (200 mm) and above.

Wall thickness

Roll grooving is generally applied to carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminium and PVC pipe with a wall of 9.5 mm (0.375") or less. Different wall thicknesses such as Sch. 10 and Sch. 40 need different roller sets. For heavy, thick-wall pipe Lede recommends cut grooving.

How to read groove dimensions

The pipe outside diameter, gasket seat, groove width, groove diameter (C), minimum wall thickness (t), groove depth (d, reference only) and flare diameter are given in the standard tables. The groove diameter must be of equal depth around the pipe circumference. The gasket seat must have no deep scratches, marks or ridges. For measuring, use a Lede groove gauge or measuring tape (MD series, 25–1050 mm), or make a quick check with a coupling housing segment.

Groove tables by pipe standard: ANSI B36.10 and other IPS pipe; large-diameter IPS pipe and BS 1387 (ISO 65); DIN 2440 / DIN 2448 (ISO 4200) and JIS G3452. For table values see the current Lede catalogue.

Stainless steel pipe

Cutting a groove with sharp corners is harder. A rounded, vague groove can lead to joint failure. Use a roller set suited to the pipe material and wall thickness. Do not use the set used for carbon steel on stainless steel, because rust and scale can transfer to the pipe. Keep grooved stainless pipe dry until installation.

PVC and copper pipe

The roller set used for carbon steel can be used on suitable PVC. Because PVC is much softer than steel, groove slowly and with less pressure. Copper pipe is thinner than carbon steel, so use a roller set made for copper.

Cutting holes in pipe

For mechanical tees, mechanical crosses and saddles, a hole of the stated diameter is cut on the pipe axis. Use the correct hole saw from the catalogue and never cut holes with a flame. After cutting, clean the edges and inspect the gasket surface within 16 mm (5/8") around the hole.
