Anchoring and hanging
Lede couplings are designed to hold axial thrust of 4–5 times the nominal working pressure, but their resistance to bending is lower than that of steel pipe. If bent beyond the permitted deflection the joint can be damaged. The system designer must therefore place main and intermediate anchors and pipe guides at suitable intervals.
Hangers must carry five times the weight of the water-filled pipe plus 250 lb (115 kg) at each support point (NFPA 13, 9.1.1.1). On lines using rigid couplings the same hanger spacing applies as for other piping methods. On straight runs using flexible couplings, a hanger should be as close to each coupling as possible, at most 1/6 of the span away. For hanger spacing consult ANSI B31.1, B31.9 or NFPA 13. Sloping lines, branch lines, short risers and drops need additional hangers or supports. Hangers and their components must be of iron.
Risers
In multi-storey buildings anchor the riser at the bottom and top, and support it at each floor with a riser clamp or U-bolt. Sway bracing (pipe guides) can be reduced to one every three floors. With proper anchoring and support, flexible or rigid couplings can be used.
Bolt and nut torque
Couplings and mechanical tees come with factory bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts alternately and evenly. On flexible couplings, tighten until the bolt pads touch metal to metal. Typical installation torques: 15–20 N·m for M10 (3/8") bolts, 30–40 N·m for M12 (1/2"). Do not add more torque once the pads touch. If there is no contact, go up to the catalogue guide torque, but do not exceed that value by more than 25%, because over-torque damages the joint. If a pad gap remains even at guide torque, there is a problem with the pipe or groove dimensions. On angle-pad rigid couplings the pads seat metal to metal and an even offset forms on both sides; this is the visual sign of correct installation.
Data table notes
Working pressure is given for use with standard or Sch. 7/10/40 steel pipe (except some high-pressure models). The field test may be done at 1.5 times the working pressure and only once. Published pressures are shock-free cold water (CWP) values. The actual permitted pressure depends on coupling size, pipe material and wall thickness, and groove type. Special care is needed on thin-wall stainless pipe such as Sch. 5. Lede may change product specifications without notice.
