Foam systems are used for flammable and combustible liquid fires, including fuel, polar solvents and chemicals. These fires are large, hot and flaming, so they fall in the high-hazard class. Putting them out means cutting off contact with air completely, and foam systems do this by both cooling the fire and covering it.
The foam solution is made by mixing foam concentrate with water at 1%, 2%, 3% or 6%. Depending on how much air is mixed into the solution, systems are called low, medium or high expansion foam systems. 3% concentrate is the most common, and the air and foam solution mix is usually low expansion.
