Choose a flexible coupling when the line will move: offset or deviated layouts, earthquakes, vibration and noise reduction. Thanks to controlled flexibility you can design the system around these movements.
Use a rigid coupling where you want the line to stay fixed like a flanged, welded or threaded joint. It reduces or eliminates unwanted angular movement, axial slip and rotation. In straight runs it prevents unnecessary stress from pipe bending.
Lede offers two rigid coupling designs:
- Angle-pad design: as the bolts are tightened the pads slide in opposite directions, the housing keys grip the pipe firmly, and the pipe grooves are forced outward against the keys.
- Tongue-and-groove (T&G) design: gives mechanical and frictional locking. It allows a small gap between the two housings.
Some standards define "rigid coupling" differently. The project designer must confirm which standard applies.
See the couplings page for models.
